Think of the Congo’s amazing rain forest in Central Africa, and how its great trees ground and center the soul, while sustaining incredibly rich biodiversity and essential ecosystems. The Forest Walk boasts a central axis with double-height volume at its centre, and a distinctive roof feature that will enhance natural daylight during the day and accentuate the spine during the night. The distinctive floor patterns and materials will introduce the inspiration drawn from the sinuous rivers, warm timbers and the foliage found in the rain forests.
The Desert Court is the court of time: an opportunity to slow down and to take a moment for yourself. This north court follows the wind-blown sand aesthetic of the exquisite desert regions of North Africa. Interior designers selected materials and patterns to reflect the warm colours, soft textures and contours found in the Sahara desert, the largest of the world’s deserts. These interior details reflect the traditional Berber and nomadic patterns found in the carpets and architecture of the region.”
The Court of the Great Lakes, combines relaxation and calm, where you are encouraged to enjoy, stand in awe and appreciate Africa’s most treasured resource – water. This court is located on the Eastern side of the centre, and inspiration here is taken from the Great Lakes of Africa. Lake Victoria is the second largest lake in the world, while Lake Tanganyika is the second deepest. The lakes inspire fishing and support amazing wildlife and bird life. The colours, materials and patterns of the Great Lakes Court are taken from the calming waters of the eastern coastline of Africa. The details echo the movement of water in the lakes and the sails of the fishing boats, which evoke an overall sense of calm.
The court that celebrates Southern Africa’s incredible mineral wealth, the Crystal Court is inspired specifically by the exquisite and unique diamonds and crystals found in Southern Africa. The aesthetic concept for the south court draws on details such as strong geometric patterns reflecting the specific aesthetic influence of the various minerals produced and treasured by the world, but birthed on this great continent.
In the Oleum Court, or court of magnificent oils, we invite you to ignite your senses as you take in the aromatic and sensual wonder of Africa’s different pampering oils. Luxurious flower and oil combinations are at the heart of this experience and we invite you to indulge in this simple, but pure pleasure. The aesthetic concept for this court on the western end of the centre, draws its inspiration from the trade and oil wealth found in West Africa. The designers combined bold colours with dramatic patterns that reflect the dark richness of unrefined oil, and the warm amber glow of more refined oil.
Sawubona. Molo. Hello. Dumelang. Avuxeni. Nda. Lotjhani. Welcome to the Mall of Africa, the new prestigious shopping destination on our continent. As you step through our doors, let me share with you our story; our ‘Hadithi’ as they call it in Kenya. Storytelling has always beat at the heart of the African continent, and because this continent is the cradle of humankind, this beat creates the pulse of the world.
We hope to give you a glimpse, not just of the future of shopping, but of our continent’s many riches and people, the inspiration that helped to form us. Because at the end of the day, we are not African because we were born in Africa; but because Africa is born in us every day.
